Analytics tools tell you whether a thumbnail is working. The number that matters is impressions click-through rate, read against your own channel's baseline rather than against anyone else's benchmark.

YouTube Studio → Analytics → Reach

Everything a third-party tool reports about your own thumbnails comes from data you already have. The Reach tab gives impressions, impressions click-through rate, and where those impressions came from, per video and over any date range.

  • Compare a video's CTR to your channel's own median, not to a published industry average.
  • Impressions from browse and suggested behave differently from search — check the split before blaming the thumbnail.
  • Watch CTR alongside average view duration; a click that leaves early is not a win.

FAQ

There is no universal number. Impressions CTR varies by topic, channel size, and traffic source. Compare a video to your own channel median over the same period instead.
